‘Game of Thrones’ Returns to Record Ratings in Season 8 Premiere

SANTA MONICA, Calif. ‘ After a 20-month absence, ‘Game of Thrones’ stormed back on Sunday night, setting a new ratings record.

The season premiere of the show’s eighth ‘ and final ‘ season had 17.4 million viewers, including viewership through its digital channels, HBO said. The previous record for a single episode of the series was 16.9 million, for the seventh-season finale in August 2017.

HBO had 11.8 million viewers watching it the old-fashioned way on regular television, according to Nielsen. That narrowly missed the record of 12.1 million who watched the seventh-season finale on television.

What a pleasure it is to have Game of Thrones back. As Netflix continues to hail down show after show, it’s almost a nostalgic experience getting to sit down to an episode of scheduled television you know everyone around the world is also glued to.

The HBO monolith has a heap of storylines to pay off in the six episodes that comprise its eighth and final season, and the rate at which major plot points were whistled through in Sunday night’s season opener is probably a sign of what’s to come.

Jon and Daenerys are a bonafide couple now, which doesn’t seem to have come as much of a surprise to anyone in their orbit given they’re clearly far and away the two most attractive people in all of the Seven Kingdoms. And yet, I’m not actually sold on their chemistry yet. There was something slightly stilted and forced about their post-dragon joyride make-out tonight, perhaps owing to the fact that the union of Jon and Dany has been on the cards for so long that it feels slightly’perfunctory?

The HBO hit delivered 17.4 million viewers on Sunday evening across multiple airings and including some streaming.

That makes the GoT season 8 premiere the biggest telecast in HBO’s history and the most-watched scripted entertainment program of the year (the prior record holder was CBS’ The Big Bang Theory with 14.1 million viewers on Feb. 7) ‘ despite HBO being available in far fewer homes than the broadcast network.

The show also blew up Twitter, racking up 5 million tweets, a record for the show (Sam revealing the truth about Jon Snow’s parents was the most tweeted about moment).

Game of Thrones Season 8 Premiere Ratings Are Highest Ever

According to HBO, last night’s premiere was viewed by 17.4 million viewers, up from the previous series high of 16.9 million viewers for the season seven finale. The season seven premiere, by comparison, garnered 16.1 million viewers. This number accounts for all of HBO’s platforms, including on-air viewings, HBOGO and HBO Now.

HBO Now experienced a jump of about 50% in viewing when compared to the season seven finale, and increased by 97% when compared to the season seven premiere. This also marked the largest night of streaming ever for HBO, with Barry reaching 2.2 million viewers, Veep bringing in 1.5 million viewers and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver coming in at 1.7 million viewers.
