Why go to the Florida Keys this summer? The short answer ‘ Because you should take advantage of off-season discounts in the Keys and other summer-only activities and events.

The short answer: Because you can. Because you can now fly direct from DFW International Airport to Key West daily year-round. In March, American Airlines announced that it was extending the previously seasonal flight beyond the March cutoff.

The tiny, tropical Key West International Airport dishes up your first taste of funky, feral Key West, a.k.a. the Conch Republic. As you cross the tarmac after exiting your 76-passenger plane, look up to see the tourist’sculptures clustered around a replica of the famous landmark buoy to mark the southernmost point in the U.S.

Car rentals are readily available at the airport for those who wish to explore Key West and beyond on their own. Otherwise, catch a taxi, Uber or Lyft to Old Town, where you can easily get around on foot or via public transportation.

Get to Know Palm Beach, America’s Original Playground

Then again…maybe it is, at least in a way. Palm Beach is one of America’s original resort destinations. Built up by Florida oil magnate, Henry Flagler, Palm Beach was meant to be the getaway to end all getaways.

Flagler connected the barrier island to the Florida coast with a railway and then established two resort hotels: the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers Hotel. The rest of the island was then filled with mansions’including Flagler’s own.

Throughout the years, the incredible opulence of early Palm Beach waned into a more typical American beach vacation location with all of the good clean fun one might have expected from 50’s beach party movie.

Surveying Florida film landscape and proposed legislation to attract productions going to Georgia, Louisiana

* * *

A shirtless Matthew McConaughey serenaded swooning audiences nationwide with the song ‘Ladies of Tampa’ in 2012’s ‘Magic Mike,’ the male stripper story that actually filmed in Tampa. Disney stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens went bad in 2013’s surreal, sun-kissed crime film ‘Spring Breakers,’ which shot in locations such as St. Pete Beach and Sarasota’s New College and Ringling College of Art & Design.
