[ Florida reverses course again, NIL law will become effective July 1 ]
For the second time in two days, the Florida legislature changed its mind regarding the state’s law allowing collegiate athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness.

In the original bill passed last year (which Gov. Ron DeSantis is yet to sign), the effective date for the NIL bill to go into effect was July 1, 2021. However, an amendment introduced on Wednesday by Florida State Senator Travis Hutson that was subsequently passed by the legislators would have delayed that effective date exactly one year to 2022. Hutson said the change was done to ensure players didn’t lose scholarships.

In response to this change, the head coaches from the three biggest football programs in the state ‘ Florida’s Dan Mullen, Florida State’s Mike Norvell and Miami’s Manny Diaz ‘ all took to Twitter to voice their disapproval.

How Politicians Are Celebrating The Marijuana Holiday 4/20 This Year

The country has come a long way since the days of politicians dismissing or shying away from marijuana issues. And a good example of that shift is the ever-growing number of lawmakers who are leaning into the cannabis holiday 4/20 with calls for reform.

For example, to kick of Tuesday’s Senate session, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke on the floor about the need to end federal marijuana prohibition, saying that ‘hopefully the next time this unofficial holiday 4/20 rolls around, our country will have made progress.’

Sunburn ‘ The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics ‘ 3.3.21

The Senate is considering a bill that would change election laws, and it’s just as divisive among Florida Influencers as it is among lawmakers.

Among the many changes in SB 90 is a requirement that voters ‘re-request’ a mail ballot for the 2022 election and every two years thereafter. Currently, mail ballot requests are good for two even-year election cycles.

Republicans say the bill would make elections more secure. Democrats, meanwhile, say it is a brazen attempt to suppress the vote.

Florida Politics asked some of the most knowledgeable lobbyists, consultants and politicos for their thoughts on the proposal and found both views were prevalent.
