Mizell, who staged sit-ins and protests, started the first NAACP chapter in South Florida and fought to designate a beach for black residents. That beach now bears his name: Dr. Von D.
Every neighborhood has its local heroes, and in Broward County, the historically black districts of South Broward are no exception.
There’s Joseph A. Ely, school principal of the all-black Crispus Attucks High School in Liberia, which became Attucks Middle School in Hollywood. There’s Isadore Mizell, who built Broward’s first school for African-American children, the Dania School for Coloreds. And there’s ’70s soul-singing group Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose (‘Too Late to Turn Back Now’), who grew up in Danie, now Dania Beach.
