1000 shows: Timucua Arts is Orlando’s living-room theater

Music lovers can now hear a concert in an imposing French cathedral or historic Austrian palace ‘ all without leaving Orlando.

That magical feat is accomplished through the audio wizardry installed this year at Timucua Arts Foundation. The high-tech upgrade is the latest step forward for one of Orlando’s most unique cultural offerings, which reaches a major milestone on Saturday: its 1,000th event.

‘This was supposed to be a one-time thing,’ said Benoit Glazer, who founded the organization in 2000 with his wife, musician ‘laine Corriveau. Glazer, then the music director of Cirque du Soleil’s ‘La Nouba’ at Walt Disney World, hosted a concert in his south Orlando home.

Labor Day Weekend things to do in South Florida Sept. 3-6

Like the old boots Thomas Rhett digs out and slips on in his hit ‘Country Again,’ this weekend has a good, familiar feel. College football is being played, the Sunday Jazz Brunch returns to the New River, Takeshi Kamioka is cooking ‘ heck, Brody Jenner is back!

This is opening weekend at The Ray, the youthful, design-forward hotel in downtown Delray Beach (it’s part of Hilton’s clubby Curio Collection). It’s very pretty. And its Rosewater Rooftop, especially, is likely to be a big hit with the Atlantic Avenue bar crowd. Architecturally striking, its location in the heart of the city’s funky Pineapple Grove Arts District nonetheless feels accidental. The Rosewater is not for everyone ‘ and doesn’t aspire to be, with a $27 Impossible Burger, $20 glasses of Meiomi (it’s a fine wine, but really?) and $7 cans of Bud Light. The hotel calls the canopies at the Rosewater ‘baldachins.’ But it’s very pretty. Visit TheRayHotel.com.

Incubus Replace Limp Bizkit as 2021 Rebel Rock Festival Headliner

The 2021 Rebel Rock Festival, like many other festivals, has had to make a few lineup changes due to ongoing concerns by bands about touring in the current COVID-affected climate. But Incubus leads several new acts joining the upcoming Florida-based music weekend, which is set to take place the weekend of Sept. 24-26 in Orlando.

Incubus have come on board the bill as headliners, replacing Limp Bizkit who bowed out of their remaining 2021 touring shortly after their Lollapalooza performance. Other newcomers to the lineup include We Came as Romans, who will fill the void left by DevilDriver, and Like Machines, who will take over Light the Torch’s spot on the bill. Emmure also recently bowed out of the festival, and organizers are still trying to fill the vacancy.
