Report: USF offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert to be named McNeese State head coach

According to a report from FootballScoop.com, USF OC Sterlin Gilbert is set to be named the head coach at McNeese State at some point this week.

Charlie Strong’will be looking at yet another important search for an offensive coordinator in the coming days.

Prior to his two year stint in Tampa, Gilbert got on the radar of most college football fans following his hire at Texas ‘ which included the Longhorns going all-in to bring him to Austin after serving as OC at Tulsa. The’Art Briles’Air Raid disciple also coached at Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois under’Dino Babers.

Report: USF’s Sterlin Gilbert headed to McNeese State

Beleaguered USF second-year offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert reportedly has been hired as coach at McNeese State.

Football Scoop reported the hiring Wednesday, but USF sports-information officials couldn’t confirm it. McNeese State sports-information director Matt Bonnette didn’t respond to a text message.

Gilbert, 40, has been the lightning rod of Bulls fans’ ire during their five-game losing streak, criticized primarily for predictable run schemes and a lack of overall diversity.

A former graduate assistant to Art Briles at Houston, he arrived from Texas with Bulls coach Charlie Strong, installing a veer-and-shoot system with a breakneck tempo, option routes for receivers and a power-run philosophy.
