‘We’re a fantastic curiosity,’ says the symphony’s executive director, Amy Ginsburg. ‘How often do you get to see an orchestra rehearse?’

The professional orchestra moved into its new artistic and operations center in early December in the Fort Myers mall’s former Chico’s store.

Since then, the place has been home to weekly youth-orchestra rehearsals and a springboard for monthly, outdoor’MiniMasterworks’ concerts in the mall’s Center Court. Eventually, the professional orchestra will start rehearsing there, too.

Plans for the center include adding a satellite box office for the professional orchestra’s performances ‘ including those at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, once they resume ‘ and indoor concerts with chamber quartets and other small groups.

‘This is where the musical magic will happen,’ Ginsburg says, motioning toward a semi-circle of chairs and music stands inside the 4,254-square-foot storefront.

‘It’s a beautiful space,’ says Kara Griffith, who oversees the youth orchestras as education and community outreach director. ‘How do I feel about it? Very inspired. It’s encouraging with so much bad news, that we had some really positive things happen to us this year.’

It’s great to have a rehearsal place of their own, Griffith says. They can set the hours and don’t have to worry about putting away the chairs every time they’re done with rehearsals.
