Many new voters scramble to join rolls in time for primary

“People seem engaged. There’s a lot of buzz,” Corley told the Times/Herald. “As long as the voter did their part, they’re legally entitled to vote a regular ballot.”

Florida had 12.9 million voters at the start of July and seems certain to break 13 million for the primary, but official county-by-county totals are not yet available. Counties have five days to record all new registrations and they still must be verified by the state, which says it will publish a new total to counties at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9.

Experts who study Florida voting trends, such as the University of Florida political scientist Daniel Smith, are in a wait-and-see mode, anticipating final book-closing numbers and enduring the lag between the close of registrations and publication of the new voter file.
