When the Class 6A, District 9 tournament seedings came out, East Lake coach Ryan Quigley did a double take. The Eagles, who were 17-7 at the time, were the No. 4 seed. Wiregrass Ranch, Sunlake and Mitchell were all seeded ahead of them despite having fewer wins.

In the first year of the Florida High School Athletic Association’s new playoff format of emphasizing strength of schedule and rankings, East Lake didn’t get much credit for its regular-season slate. If the Eagles, ranked 201st overall in the state by MaxPreps, were going to advance to the postseason, they had to do it the old-fashioned way and clinch a district title. Eli Manning benched, Daniel Jones named Giants’ starting QB – Wilkes Barre Times

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ‘ Eli Manning is being benched and the Daniel Jones era with the New York Giants is about to begin.

Coach Pat Shurmur announced Tuesday that the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft is replacing two-time Super Bowl MVP as the Giants’ starting quarterback.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Shurmur refused to say Manning would remain the starter after the team opened with two straight losses, the sixth time in seven years New York has gotten off to a 0-2 start.

The 38-year-old Manning has been the Giants’ starter since replacing Kurt Warner after nine games in the 2004 season, the year Manning was traded to New York by San Diego after it took him with the No. 1 overall pick.

It was a year of fond farewells in the Lockport area, for both people, institutions and in many cases, records themselves, in 2018.

It was also a year of new beginnings, as Lockport said hello to a new, artificial-turf football field at Max D. Lederer Stadium and the construction of two turf baseball fields on Beattie Avenue.

Lockport High School said hello to several new coaches, including Trait Smith (football), Bill Morello (wrestling), Lou Cercone (golf), Erik Musto (ice hockey), Stephen Kojsza (tennis, girls volleyball) and Alexa Barrancotta (cross country assistant), while we said goodbye to some important local records, thanks to guys like J.J. Napoli (golf) and Malik Brooks (high school football).
