Surveillance video released following drive-by shooting of five-year-old boy in Chicago

Two days after the 2016 election, the Obamas welcomed then-President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump to the White House in a symbolic gesture epitomizing the peaceful transfer of power. The Trumps have afforded the Bidens no such invitation.

Americans kept spending in October, but at a slower pace than previous months. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that retail sales rose 0.3% last month. That’s much smaller than the increase in September, which was downwardly revised, and less than what economists had expected. Sales of apparel and sporting goods fell more than 4%. Even grocery sales slumped, as did restaurant receipts. But Amazon’s ‘Prime Day’ shopping extravaganza helped drive sales at online merchants up 3%. Restraining overall sales growth last month: the resurgence in new COVID-19 infections and declining household income. A federal weekly unemployment supplement has lapsed. Millions of freelancers and gig workers will soon lose government-funded benefits next month. And another government benefits program will lapse at the end of December. Amid those concerns, consumer sentiment unexpectedly fell in early November. For the rest of the year, economists expect moderate growth in retail sales. That will contribute to slower economic growth following the sharp, historic rebound in the third quarter. The frail economy and the health crisis are major challenges facing President-elect Joe Biden when he moves into the White House in January.

Readers sound off on food security, shootings and Trump’s obstinance

Manhattan: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, allows 1.6 million New Yorkers to remain food secure and provide healthy options for their families who may otherwise not know where their next meal is coming from. Unfortunately, SNAP users currently have extremely limited options to purchase their groceries online for delivery to their homes.

Studies performed prior to 2020 show that 43% of Americans have purchased groceries online at least once. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, online grocery shopping has become an increasingly utilized resource for those who are not comfortable or cannot safely shop in person. SNAP users should have the same level of access to this resource as those not shopping with SNAP benefits.
