[ XFL Week 2: Tampa Bay Vipers have questions to answer ]
Next up on the slate for the Vipers are the Seattle Dragons, who also dropped their season opener (fun fact: another former USF star quarterback, BJ Daniels, plays for the Dragons).

TAMPA, Fla. ‘ The arrival of a new football league was supposed to be the arrival of a new football feel for Tampa Bay.’

The Vipers showed a bit of a fight up front against the New York Guardians, but even in a league that encourages thinking outside of the box, still sputtered and settled for field goal attempts in the red zone.’

While quarterback Aaron Murray struggled, former South Florida star Quinten Flowers sat waiting in the wings, providing an occasional spark for the team’s subpar offense.

Yikes. Remember when oddsmakers picked the Vipers to lead the XFL in wins? Good times. Maybe we all forgot how roughly Marc Trestman’s NFL career went before his return to the CFL, because Sunday’s debut, which featured a measly three points, was not encouraging in the slightest. The Vipers were on the road, yes, and New York was especially feisty on “D,” but it’s not as if Trestman’s hand-picked starting QB, Aaron Murray, inspired any confidence along the way. He needs to get really creative to turn this around.’

XFL results Week 1: Which coaches made good decisions and who made mistakes

What we can learn about the coaching in the XFL after 60 minutes of play for Bob Stoops, June Jones, and more.

The XFL kicked off its inaugural season this past weekend, and with each team completing their first game, we can start to develop a baseline of what to expect. One game is a small sample size, especially in a league with zero history, but it’s better than nothing! We know some players that might be worth paying a closer eye on, and we also have coaches who have shown what tendencies might stick from their former NFL, college, and CFL lives.

The NFL season is over. For the Miami Dolphins, it’s been over for two months, but the Kansas City Chiefs’ comeback at Super Bowl LIV officially ended the season for everyone else. Now the true football hangover begins. There will be no football locally until the University of Miami Hurricanes play the Temple University Owls in their season opener September 5.

There’s a new answer to that question in the form of something old: the XFL. The football league founded and owned by World Wrestling Entertainment boss Vince McMahon is back, and it’s here to make us all forget that real football is gone until those seasonal Halloween costume stores start popping up again.

XFL 2020: Everything you need to know

The XFL was started by World Wrestling Entertainment’s Vince McMahon back in 2001. It was a joint venture between the WWE and NBC Sports.

There were eight teams, one of which was in Orlando. It was a smashmouth league, highlighted by player nicknames, a race to recover a loose ball instead of a kickoff, appearances from wrestlers and more.

The league folded after just one season, but certain elements of it can still be seen in today’s NFL.

Late in 2018, Vince McMahon was back, announcing a 2.0 version of the league, beginning in 2020. Oliver Luck was named commissioner of the new league, and said it would not be about gimmicks, but would focus on football, finding quality players and giving fans a fast paced and exciting game.

Do the Bucs suck enough to lose to Tampa Bay’s new XFL team?

Let’s say Tampa Bay’s new XFL squad The Vipers was to scrimmage the Bucs. Sure, it’s a far-fetched idea, and totally hypothetical as this would never actually happen, but with the way the Bucs have been playing (yeah, 5 interceptions against the Panthers wasn’t a good look Jameis) it’s an idea worth exploring.

Realistically speaking this would be a blowout.’The XFL is a league for guys who couldn’t crack an NFL roster, and the Bucs may be bad, but they’re not the Dolphins (now THAT would be a game). However, XFL players are better than most on the college level, and the entire Vipers roster got signed for a reason.’

Bulls in the Pros: NFL Week 6 and XFL Draft

Thanks to some coincidental bye weeks, only three USF alumni were in action around the NFL this week. Only two of them got any significant playing time too. So instead of our normal weekly recap, let’s do a full season reviewing what they’ve done through five weeks.

* * *

Mack had a bye week last Sunday, but he started off 2019 with a bang getting 174 yards and a TD on the ground. He followed that up with a few quiet weeks, but came back strong in week five where he was the catalyst for the Colts offense in an upset win over the Chiefs. That night, he ran for 132 yards and nearly 5 yards per carry. He currently has the 7th most rushing yards in the league, with 470, which is also the most for any player who’s already had a bye week. On top of those yards, Mack has two rushing scores and added 42 yards in the passing game.
